Ships
Ships are almost always customized for their buyer. Due to the complications of assembly, the high costs, and the expected lifespan it has become a standard practice to customize each one for buyers. Even mass produced military type ships are customized for their individual officers.
Ships are incredibly complicated and serve a huge variety of purposes, for some people mastering the expanse of these machines is an entire way of life. Those prepared to learn all that there is to know can look below at the vast expanse of ship classifications.
Classification rules
It should always be noted that all ship classes come down to their classification and a code featuring a letter and number sequence. The letters represent the technology type that the ship uses most prevalently as sorted by solar origin and then planar origin, and the number represents the generation of technology aboard the ship. A sample classification code would be as follows; Sol-Z3, this would signify the ship originates from the Sol system in the Zonaricht plane and uses up to the third generation of ship technology.
Sol: Sol System
A: Abyss
F: Finsor
N: Necrosi
R: Rixa
Z: Zonaricht
V: Vermasih
Shuttles
Shuttles are generally used as transit methods to move small groups around. They are short range with very little systems, and instead are just full of room to seat people and keep them safe. Shuttles occupy the grey area between fighters and ships, not quite large enough to be a real ship but larger then your average fighter or personal transport. They are one of three ship classes that frequently are equipped for both atmosphere and space conditions. Generally their engines are highly empowered by ethi technology to generate the thrust and long term power needed to leave atmospheres.
Assault Shuttle
These shuttles are especially geared for troop or law enforcement movements. Armored and near impervious to small arms fire an assault shuttle can traverse the planets surface with great speed and better security then most land transports. However, they are not equipped for operation outside of atmosphere. It is capable of generating necessary thrust but it has no life support systems.
Drop Ship
A crucial component to infantry warfare, drop ships are used to quickly enter an atmosphere and land troops from orbiting ships. Often under enemy fire ranging from small arms to dedicated anti-air platforms. They sacrifice comfort and long term fuel supplies for armor and speed. Some drop ships will come equipped with weapons to clear landing zones.
Personal Shuttle
These are small multi purpose vessels for moving small quantities of supplies or individuals in relative comfort. Many are equipped for both atmosphere and space operation, allowing for movement of people and supplies between cities, ships, or from surface to orbit.
Combat Ships
These are the fundamental classes that many combat ships belong to. These generally have a good balance of offensive and defensive power. Trading comfort and leisure often for more firepower, these ships are weapons not cruise ships. Sorted by size.
Bomber
Small craft that seat between one and four people, maneuverable and often equipped with advanced weaponry they excel at eliminating area targets or doing extreme damage to specific areas of a larger ship. Though they are poorly equipped for fighting craft of equal size.
Fighter
Fighters are individual or two man craft intended to provide support for larger ships or operations. Strong at eliminating specific targets on larger ships or other small craft they are crucial to any large theater of operations. Without them opposing fighters could have free reign dodging larger ship weapons and disabling specific areas.
Starship: 30-100m, 20
Corvette: 100-300m, 50-200
Destroyer: 300-500, 200-400
Cruiser: 500-1000, 400-800
Battleship: 1-2km, 800-1500
Dreadnought: 2-5km, 3000
Titan: 15km+, 300k
Destroyer
With a ship the size of a destroyer more missions are possible and the ships ability to inflict and suffer damage begins to increase dramatically. Destroyers have more versatility then frigates on the battlefield, some hardcore militant teams or pirates prize these as their ship of choice. However, their usability in a large scale battle between bigger ships is markedly low due to their size and lack thereof. They are small enough to be targeted by both fighter craft and big enough to attract the attention of much larger ships
. Few destroyers are made for atmosphere operations, but the large airship styled destroyers are capable of drastically impacting planetside endeavors.
Cruiser
The general standard of a fleet combat ship, even if not the most common. These have a strong balance of weapons and defensive systems, they are also large enough to perform a very diverse collection of objectives. Easily capable of comfortable living conditions without sacrificing their combat ability and modifications can be made for any individual task.
Battlecruiser
The term for ships that fall between cruisers and real battleships. It has the same benefits of a cruiser but is large enough to enter a real theater of operations, capable of fighting against battleships and more with their size and customizability. They can even store smaller ships like a few fighters or shuttles.
Battleship
These ships are where things get serious, when a war machine is called for these are the first to answer. Large ships dedicated to the art of destruction, however large, this classification tends to sacrifice hangar space for more weaponry. Often battleships pose a major threat due to the sheer firepower they carry, capable of being armed with
super-heavy weapons they can punch through the shields of equal or greater class ships with ease and offer support for ground operations from orbit.
Carrier
Huge warships that trade their firepower for hangar space and living stations for large crews. These ships support operations by providing the smaller but necessary crafts needed for any given situation, they often are suited to modify and refit these smaller craft as well. Some even carry the necessary tools to perform in-field repairs of other war ships. They are capable of carrying craft up to the size of a frigate in large quantities, though most carry fighters and bombers.
Dreadnought
Generally the largest ships built in any standard fleet, they carry the resources to do a wide variety of tasks without needing to dock and refit. They are intended as floating military bases, even though designed and focusing on firepower they will still carry hangars and a large collection of heavy weapons alongside their super-heavy. These ships are frequently sent to the fore of any given encounter to lead fleets to war.
Super Carrier
Massive, rivaling and sometimes even shaming the size of a dreadnought. Super carriers are only deployed when a war is prepared to last for years or some fortress of a planet needs besieging.
They are not only capable of carrying frigates, they carry cruisers. While cruisers don't need to actually dock and launch like fighters, super carriers have massive crews that can repair and refit these ships for missions even in the midst of a battle. When a super carrier comes in to play, somebody wants something taken care of.
Super Dreadnought
The general definition of "overcompensating." Super dreadnoughts are smaller then super carriers but much larger then regular dreadnoughts. They are considered an impractical expense because the materials used in their construction could have built several battle cruisers and a battleship which would carry almost as much firepower and provide more tactical maneuverability. However, these ships are still battlefield kings in their own right. Generally they are only built for show or for guarding a major area as a deterrant to anyone who might think of raiding that area, but sometimes they are called out of their guard stations to visit a battle zone in force.
Other Types
Some ships might be deployed to war, or used for more personal reasons such as trade. Ships in this area are diverse and do not focus purely on the art of destruction, but many are used to compliment combat ships in fleets or for a variety of other tasks.
Starship
Larger then fighters, a frigate comes equipped with more weaponry and life support. They are capable of long term use without docking, they are often the chosen ship for space faring crews of mercenaries or small time traders and most models support atmosphereric entry and exit. A highly favored craft for a small group that travels frequently.
Freighter
Slow, unmaneuverable, and lightly defended, these are a necessity to any larger trading organization. They have one purpose, cargo transport, and only cargo transport. Sure some pirates rig them into kamikaze weapons, but thats like using a screw driver as a hammer.
Landing Ship
This type of ship is highly specialized. It sports decent defensive capabilities if only out of necessity. Its purpose is to land from space to the surface of a planet and then leave once again to do this again. Big time traders will use this to drop off massive loads or militaries to deploy a small army directly into the planets surface instead of sending several smaller shuttles and freighters. It is one of two classes of larger ship capable of doing this, carriers are not equipped to enter atmospheres or fight gravity for a take off of such bulk. Landing ships use Ethi technology so heavily that it threatens to fall apart even in space without it.
Planetary Siege Ship
The direct military cousin of the landing ship. It shares the exact same purpose but is modified with heavy armor and special offloading methods. It deploys military bases or ready-to-assault armies very rapidly and often leaves a piece of itself behind in the effort.
Factory Ship
Bordering a space station, these ships are massive and slow moving. They are intended for construction in areas where it would be easier to manufacture materials in space. They would be classified as space stations were not for the fact that they are equipped to move and do not support many of the renewing resources stations utilize.
Ultra Carrier
These things are the largest ships ever built, and they do not serve entirely to military purposes. There are few in existence and the only reason they are not classified as a space station is they are fully equipped to fly around the galaxy. Ultra carriers are capable of never contacting civilization ever again, they are equipped as well if not better then a planet and are the size of a large city.
They carry renewable resources and generate ecosystems within themselves as needed to produce food and energy for themselves. All they need to stay afloat is to linger around suns, and can go without for years at a time. This massive size has only been used for pure military measures in one case, the Alnae Ultra Carrier "Eclipse". Though only four others exist in the galaxy at all.
Building a ship requires several factors to be examined.
Chasis/model: Defines the general layout and size of the ship.
Generators: Outputs power to the ships systems, modifications available to the ship rely on these.
Hull: Keeps everything inside against the pressures of space and withstands damage.
Life Support Systems: These systems determine the ships crew size that it can support, as well as their xp gain rate
Engines: Makes you move
Optionals: Details like shields, weapons, and special electronic systems are not necessary to fly, but are often desired.
