"Between fallout, the plague, and nerds with gene kits, it seems we've made something useful."
When scientists were making clones of pure humans to try and stabilize the population and well as improve its ability to expand, invevitably all that genetic tinkering gave someone a bright idea. Why not make ones built for fighting as well? The hybrid mutants tend to be male due to the desire to use them for practical applications in war with the invaders, though a few that were mixed with matriarchal animal species are female. As well as the odd girl here and there from things just not going 100% right with all these experiments. Hybrid mutants range from grotesque distorted monsters begging to be put out of their misery to essentially furries. They're almost all sterile, due to lack of genetic compatibility with anything else unless multiple of the same kind were made in the same lab using the same templates.
